USW LOCAL 1137

As of February 16, 2009, Local 1137 has 254 active members. 234 of those are in the Maintenance Department, 2 are Fire Inspectors, 10 work in the Storeroom, and 8 are on the Train Crew. We have 3 non-duespayers in our jurisdiction: Houston Goines and Roger Terry in the Storeroom and Tom Blevins on the Train Crew.

This Local, then affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers, signed it's first Labor agreement with Champion Papers in February, 1971. Through the years, various International Union mergers have made us part of the United Paperworkers (UPIU), the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemicals and Energy Workers (PACE) and now, the USW. International Paper purchased Champion, including the Courtland Mill, in June 2000.

The mill has around 1,100 employees and we have 2 other USW Locals at the mill - Local 193 represents the employees in the pulp and power areas of the mill and Local 1161 represents those on the paper machines, finishing, shipping, and warehousing. We share our Union Hall with Local 193.
